Greetings and concert season update
November 25, 2022
Greetings Dear Friends of the Elmer Iseler Singers,
As we approach the most magical season of the year, we are getting in touch to wish you the joy and blessings of family and friends, as you gather to celebrate together and connect with each other.
Our organization has been very conscious of our Provincial Health Advisories and the subsequent requests to wear masks again in all upcoming indoor circumstances. Together with the knowledge of over-crowded hospitals and serious health concerns, we have made the difficult decision to not have an indoor reception for Sherry and Shortbread this December.
In celebration of the Season, very soon, you will receive an email with a link to a Seasonal Choral Video Greeting from Lydia Adams and the Elmer Iseler Singers, that will be available to view until December 25th.
The Elmer Iseler Singers move forward with our already advertised Handel’s Messiah at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church on Friday, December 9th at 7:30 p.m. This year we are delighted to present the VIVA Chamber Singers (18-30 yrs.), Carol Ratzlaff conductor, as our associate choir, following the EIS mentorship programme on-line throughout the Pandemic. The outstanding, award-winning soloists featured will be: Meredith Hall, Soprano; Andrea Ludwig, Mezzo-Soprano; Owen McCausland, Tenor; and Jorell Williams, Bass with orchestra. We hope you will join us. Audience members are requested to wear masks for health safety reasons. For tickets click the button below.
This fall we presented Timothy Corlis’ Om Saha Navavatu (May We all be Blessed) in our opening series concert “Walk and Touch Peace”. This commission and five subsequent Greater Toronto Area performances were supported by your donations, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. The World Premiere, in Toronto, of the major forty-five-minute choral composition, a sound journey, accompanied by healing instruments from around the world, received great critical acclaim from the audiences. These concert projects included the Youth of Agincourt Collegiate music students, Amanda Tulk-O’Reilly director and the Senior Dance Corp of Currie Hall, the Silver Swans with Annemarie Cabri. We are still reveling in the glorious sounds of Om Saha Navavatu.
Recently we have also performed in three Ontario guest artist concerts: Grace United Church concert series in Thornbury, October 29th; St. John’s United Church concert series in Alliston, November 6th; and Brantford Music Club concert series at the Sanderson Centre, Brantford, November 20th. We were once again so proud to be asked to perform at the City of Toronto Remembrance Day Ceremony at Old City Hall on November 11th.
We look forward to your continued support as we plan for a spring concert of Canadian premieres, together with the John Rutter Requiem, with instruments, on Sunday, April 30th, 2023, at Eglinton St. George’s United Church, Toronto.
We embrace the twice postponed tour of Atlantic Canada that includes Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in March of 2023 with the hope of bringing the joy of choral music to the lives of Maritimers and especially those so devastated by the forceful effects of Hurricane Fiona.

Introducing the Guest Choir and Soloists joining us on December 9th for Handel’s Messiah
The Elmer Iseler Singers are looking forward to returning to Yorkminster Park Baptist Church in Toronto on Friday, December 9th at 7:30 pm to share the rich textures of the solos and the glorious choruses of Handel’s resplendent Messiah, with special guest choir – The VIVA Chamber Singers of Toronto, and award winning soloists: Meredith Hall – Soprano; Andrea Ludwig – Mezzo Soprano; Owen McCausland – Tenor; and Jorell Williams – Bass.
VIVA Chamber Singers
After two years of online mentorship and training with the VIVA Chamber Singers, we are so excited to come together in person.
The VIVA Chamber Singers (an SATB chamber choir) is comprised of experienced and highly-skilled singers who are young professionals, post-secondary students, and senior high school students.
VIVA was founded in 2000 by Carol Woodward Ratzlaff in response to widespread cuts to public school arts programs. As a lifelong vocal music educator, she believes that every person should have access to a singing experience. With this in mind, VIVA is committed to putting chorister voice at the forefront of their organization through the core values of choral performance artistry, choral creation and vocal music education, inclusive choral practices, choral leadership and mentoring, and community connections.

Meredith Hall – Soprano
Canadian soprano Meredith Hall last performed Handel’s Messiah with the Elmer Iseler Singer in 2018 and we can’t be more delighted to have her back on stage with us!
“As always, Canadian soprano Hall used her shimmering voice as a vessel for eloquent storytelling. She caressed words, in several languages, as she communicated the essence of the texts.” — The Plain Dealer, Donald Rosenberg [Apollo’s Fire Celtic Christmas]

Andrea Ludwig – Mezzo Soprano
Juno-nominated mezzo soprano Andrea Ludwig is an artist of tremendous depth, musicality and scope. She has been an integral part of the Elmer Iseler Singer for many years, you won’t want to miss her!
“Ludwig, with her warm voice and unpretentious musicality, neither over dramatic nor inexpressive, but intuitive and brimming with her complete mastery of meaning, born of a profound understanding of the text, overwhelmed us with astonishment.” – Stephen Pedersen, Halifax Chronicle

Owen McCausland – Tenor
Canadian tenor Owen McCausland is increasingly in demand for engagements with both opera companies and symphonies across North America. As an alumnus of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio – He is sure to delight!
“His tone is wonderfully broad for a tenor and he shaped the phrasing with clever restraint.” – Lev Brotishenko, Montreal Gazette

Jorell Williams – Bass
Jorell Williams has been hailed by Opera News as having “a solid vocal core and easy, natural production” and the New York Times for being “magnificent” and “rich toned”. He is an advocate for artist rights and is a newly appointed artistic council advisor for On-Site Opera and the new music board for the Brooklyn Art Song Society, using his experience to consult with arts organizations on their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives.
Last year he performed Handel’s Messiah with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and we are so excited to have him with us this year!

The Elmer Iseler Singers are saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Donald Bartle.
Donald was a founding member of the Festival Singers of Canada, singing in the historic 1954 opening performance of the choir at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. He sang with both Elmer Iseler and Lydia Adams in the Elmer Iseler Singers in his more than 50 year career as a professional choral singer. In November 2000, he accepted the first Elmer Iseler Singers’ Honorary Life Membership.
