Hello and Autumn Greetings, Friends of the Elmer Iseler Singers!
Fall Mysticism
The Elmer Iseler Singers are beginning our 46th Toronto concert season on Friday, Nov. 8th at 7:30 p.m. in St. Basil’s Catholic Parish, 50 St. Joseph St., Toronto with a world premiere of a spectacular new work for unaccompanied choir by Peter-Anthony Togni: The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.
We are thrilled to be joined in this performance by our friends in the Elora Singers, and this concert is not to be missed!
The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is a major work, about an hour long, that reflects Peter’s lifelong spiritual journey, and is based on the ancient Orthodox tradition, even though it is a contemporary setting and sung in English. The spectacular soundscapes of Peter-Anthony Togni’s writing are well known to our concert audiences in Toronto and throughout Canada through his magnificent Ave Verum Corpus and other major works we have premiered, recorded and sung widely.
Peter-Anthony Togni has written very personally about his new work:
“This moving work was a kind of soundtrack for my own spiritual journey. I sang in the choir at St Vladimir Orthodox Church in Halifax for five years. Actively participating in the liturgy helped me greatly in my compositional process. I hope this work, beyond the spiritual setting, will suggest the need for human connection and transcendence and our need for light, joy and peace.“
We welcome you and your friends and family to be lifted up by this stunning new work and by the singing of these two great choirs in a work that has its inspiration from Rachmaninoff and which glows from within with mysticism and light.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
